Trek Overview

The Roopkund Trek is one of the most fascinating and adventurous high-altitude treks in Uttarakhand, offering an unforgettable blend of mystery, mythology, natural beauty, and Himalayan adventure. Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Roopkund is a glacial lake perched at an altitude of approximately 4,800 meters (15,800 ft) above sea level. Popularly known as the “Mystery Lake,” it has captivated trekkers, historians, and researchers from around the world for decades.

Roopkund gained international recognition after the discovery of hundreds of ancient human skeletons around the lake’s frozen edges. These skeletal remains were first reported in 1942 by forest ranger H.K. Madhwal. Later, radiocarbon dating conducted by researchers at Oxford University revealed that many of the skeletons date back to around 850 AD. According to scientific studies, these individuals are believed to have died during a sudden and devastating hailstorm, where hailstones as large as cricket balls caused fatal injuries. Due to the freezing Himalayan temperatures, many of the skeletons remain remarkably well preserved and are still visible when the snow melts, making Roopkund one of the world’s most mysterious archaeological sites.

However, the Roopkund Trek is much more than just its mysterious history. The trail is renowned for its incredible diversity of landscapes, taking trekkers through dense oak and rhododendron forests, picturesque Himalayan villages, sparkling streams, expansive alpine meadows, rugged mountain ridges, and breathtaking snow-covered terrain. Every day on the trail presents a completely different experience, making it one of the most rewarding trekking routes in the Indian Himalayas.

One of the biggest highlights of the trek is passing through the spectacular Bedni Bugyal, one of India’s largest and most beautiful alpine meadows. During spring and summer, these grasslands are covered with colorful wildflowers, while autumn offers crystal-clear views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Throughout the journey, trekkers are treated to magnificent panoramas of iconic mountains such as Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and on clear days, Chaukhamba.

The trail also offers a rich cultural experience as it passes sacred sites like the Latu Devta Temple and Kalu Vinayak Temple, both of which hold great religious significance for the local communities and the famous Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra.

Although the trek is considered moderate to difficult, it is highly rewarding for trekkers with good physical fitness and prior preparation. From scenic forests and peaceful campsites to high-altitude adventure and fascinating history, every step of the Roopkund Trek creates memories that last a lifetime.

Whether you are seeking adventure, photography, Himalayan landscapes, or a journey into one of India’s greatest mysteries, the Roopkund Trek offers an experience unlike any other. With experienced trek leaders, quality camping equipment, nutritious meals, and a safety-first approach, The Mountain Hike ensures that every trekker enjoys a comfortable, well-organized, and unforgettable Himalayan expedition.

Why Choose This Trek?

The Roopkund Trek stands out as one of the most iconic Himalayan adventures because it combines breathtaking natural beauty with centuries-old mystery. Unlike many other trekking destinations, Roopkund offers a unique opportunity to witness an ancient glacial lake that has fascinated archaeologists, historians, and trekkers alike.

The trail passes through enchanting oak and rhododendron forests, vibrant alpine meadows, pristine rivers, and rugged mountain landscapes before reaching the legendary Skeleton Lake. Along the journey, you’ll witness panoramic views of towering Himalayan peaks, including Trishul and Nanda Ghunti, while experiencing the peaceful charm of remote mountain villages and traditional Garhwali culture.

Adventure lovers will appreciate the changing terrain—from lush forests and grassy bugyals to rocky ridges and snow-covered slopes. Every campsite offers spectacular sunrise and sunset views, making the trek a paradise for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Day 1: Rishikesh to Wan Village

286 km 10–11 hrs Wan Village

Your journey to the mystical Roopkund Trek begins from Rishikesh, the gateway to many of Uttarakhand's famous Himalayan expeditions. Early in the morning, you'll drive through the spiritual town of Rishikesh before following the beautiful mountain roads alongside the Alaknanda River. The route passes through Karnaprayag, where the Alaknanda and Pindar rivers meet, before continuing towards Lohajung and finally reaching the peaceful Himalayan village of Wan.

The drive itself is a memorable experience, offering spectacular views of river valleys, terraced farms, pine forests, charming mountain settlements, and snow-covered peaks in the distance. As you gradually gain altitude, the crisp mountain air and changing landscapes build excitement for the trekking adventure ahead.

Upon reaching Wan Village (8,200 ft), check into your guesthouse or campsite. After freshening up, enjoy a warm dinner while attending a detailed briefing conducted by the trek leaders from The Mountain Hike. The briefing covers the upcoming trail, safety guidelines, altitude awareness, and essential trekking tips. Spend the evening relaxing and preparing for your first day on the trail.

Day 2: Wan Village to Geruli Patal

7 km 5–6 hrs Geruli Patal

After breakfast, begin your first trekking day from Wan Village. The trail starts with a gradual climb through dense oak, maple, and rhododendron forests that remain cool and shaded throughout the journey. The peaceful surroundings, chirping birds, and fresh mountain air make this an enjoyable introduction to the Roopkund Trek.

Soon after leaving the village, you'll pass the sacred Latu Devta Temple, an important religious site closely associated with the famous Nanda Devi Raj Jat pilgrimage. Continuing ahead, you'll cross the beautiful Neel Ganga River before steadily gaining altitude through lush Himalayan forests.

As the trail progresses, occasional clearings reveal breathtaking views of distant snow-capped peaks and deep mountain valleys. By afternoon, you'll arrive at Geruli Patal (10,560 ft), a tranquil campsite surrounded by dense forests. Enjoy a freshly prepared meal, relax amidst nature, and spend the evening under a star-filled Himalayan sky before settling in for the night.

Day 3: Geruli Patal to Patar Nachauni

6 km Approx. 5 hrs Patar Nachauni

Today's trek marks a significant transition as you gradually leave the dense forests behind and enter the breathtaking alpine landscapes that make the Roopkund Trek famous. The trail climbs steadily through rolling grasslands and scenic ridges, offering increasingly expansive views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges.

One of the major highlights of the day is walking through the magnificent Bedni Bugyal, among the most beautiful alpine meadows in India. During the trekking season, these lush green meadows are dotted with colorful wildflowers and grazing livestock, creating postcard-perfect scenery against towering snow-covered peaks.

As you continue climbing, the majestic peaks of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti dominate the skyline, providing incredible photography opportunities throughout the day. The cool mountain breeze and peaceful surroundings make this one of the most scenic sections of the trek.

By afternoon, you'll reach Patar Nachauni (12,750 ft), an important campsite before entering the higher-altitude region of the trek. Relax with a warm meal, soak in the panoramic mountain views, and enjoy another peaceful evening in the Himalayas as you prepare for the more challenging days ahead.

Day 4: Patar Nachauni to Bhagwabasa via Kalu Vinayak

6.5 km 5–6 hrs Bhagwabasa

Today's trek is one of the most exciting sections of the Roopkund Trek as you move into the higher reaches of the Himalayas. After an early breakfast, begin your ascent towards Kalu Vinayak Temple, one of the highest and most revered temples on the trail. The climb is steep and demanding, but every step rewards you with increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

As you gain altitude, the landscape transforms dramatically. The lush meadows gradually give way to rocky terrain, while the tree line disappears completely, revealing vast Himalayan vistas. From Kalu Vinayak, trekkers are treated to breathtaking views of towering peaks, including Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and on clear days, Chaukhamba.

After taking a short break at the temple, continue on a relatively gradual trail towards Bhagwabasa (14,150 ft). Depending on the season, patches of snow begin to appear, adding to the excitement of the journey. The terrain becomes more rugged and the air noticeably thinner, reminding trekkers that they are entering a true high-altitude environment.

Upon reaching Bhagwabasa, settle into your campsite and enjoy a hot meal while surrounded by dramatic Himalayan landscapes. The evening is the perfect time to rest, hydrate, and prepare mentally and physically for the summit push to the legendary Roopkund Lake the following morning.

Day 5: Bhagwabasa to Roopkund Summit and Back to Patar Nachauni

11 km Approx. 9 hrs 15,800 ft

This is the most anticipated and rewarding day of the Roopkund Trek. The journey begins before sunrise, allowing trekkers to make the most of stable morning weather conditions. The trail from Bhagwabasa to Roopkund is steep and challenging, often covered with snow depending on the season.

As you climb higher, the panoramic views become increasingly spectacular. Massive Himalayan peaks such as Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba dominate the skyline, creating one of the most breathtaking mountain panoramas in Uttarakhand.

After a challenging ascent, you'll finally reach Roopkund Lake (15,800 ft)—the mysterious glacial lake that has fascinated explorers, scientists, and trekkers for decades. During the snow-free season, some of the ancient skeletal remains can still be seen around the lake, giving Roopkund its famous nickname, "The Mystery Lake" or "Skeleton Lake."

Spend some time soaking in the remarkable atmosphere, capturing photographs, and appreciating the unique combination of natural beauty and historical mystery that makes this destination so extraordinary.

After exploring the lake, begin the descent back to Bhagwabasa before continuing further down to Patar Nachauni. Although descending is generally easier on the lungs, it requires careful footing, especially on rocky and snowy sections. After approximately nine hours of trekking, return to camp for a well-earned dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Patar Nachauni to Wan Village

13 km Approx. 7–8 hrs Wan Village

After breakfast, begin your descent towards Wan Village, retracing the beautiful trail through alpine meadows, forests, and mountain landscapes. Although the route is mostly downhill, the long descent can be demanding on the knees, making trekking poles especially helpful.

The journey offers another opportunity to appreciate the incredible diversity of the Roopkund Trek. As you descend, barren high-altitude landscapes gradually transition into lush grasslands, dense oak forests, and colorful rhododendron trees. You'll once again pass crystal-clear streams and peaceful clearings that offer perfect spots for short breaks and photography.

Upon reaching Wan Village, check into your guesthouse or campsite and enjoy a warm meal. The evening is a great time to relax with fellow trekkers, share memories from the summit day, and celebrate the successful completion of the trekking portion of the adventure.

Day 7: Wan Village to Rishikesh

286 km 10–11 hrs Trek Ends

After an early breakfast, bid farewell to the beautiful Himalayan village of Wan and begin your return journey to Rishikesh. The drive follows the same scenic route through Lohajung, Karnaprayag, and Rishikesh, offering one final chance to admire Uttarakhand's stunning mountain landscapes.

As you travel alongside winding rivers, terraced fields, and charming villages, you'll have plenty of time to reflect on the unforgettable experiences of the past week—from peaceful forests and expansive alpine meadows to the thrilling summit of the mysterious Roopkund Lake.

By evening, you'll arrive in Rishikesh, marking the end of your Roopkund Trek with lifelong memories, breathtaking photographs, and an incredible sense of accomplishment.

The Roopkund Trek is renowned for offering one of the most diverse trekking experiences in the Indian Himalayas. Every stage of the journey introduces a completely new landscape, ensuring that the adventure remains exciting from beginning to end.

The trek starts in the peaceful village of Wan, where traditional Himalayan culture and warm local hospitality provide the perfect introduction to the journey. As you move deeper into the mountains, the trail winds through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and maple, creating a cool and refreshing atmosphere filled with birdsong and the fragrance of wildflowers.

One of the most memorable highlights of the trek is crossing the breathtaking alpine meadows of Bedni Bugyal. During spring and early summer, the meadows burst into bloom with colorful flowers, while autumn offers crystal-clear views of the surrounding mountains.

As the trek progresses, the terrain becomes increasingly rugged. Rocky ridges, snow patches, glacial landscapes, and high-altitude campsites provide an authentic Himalayan mountaineering experience. With experienced guides from The Mountain Hike, trekkers can fully immerse themselves in the adventure while enjoying professional support, quality camping arrangements, and a safe trekking environment.

Proper planning is essential to make your Roopkund Trek safe, comfortable, and enjoyable. Since the trek reaches an altitude of 15,800 ft (4,800 m), preparation should begin several weeks before your departure. Physical fitness, the right gear, and choosing a reliable trekking organization all play a crucial role in ensuring a successful Himalayan adventure.

Choose the Right Season

The ideal time to undertake the Roopkund Trek is during May to June and September to October. These months offer pleasant daytime temperatures, clear mountain views, and relatively stable weather conditions. Avoid trekking during the monsoon season due to slippery trails and landslide risks, while heavy snowfall during winter often makes the route inaccessible.

Build Your Fitness

Although the Roopkund Trek is suitable for fit beginners, it is considered a moderate to difficult trek because of its long trekking days and high altitude. Start preparing at least 6–8 weeks before your trek by focusing on cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, and stamina. Running, cycling, stair climbing, brisk walking, squats, lunges, and core-strengthening exercises are excellent ways to prepare your body for the demanding terrain.

Pack Smart

Carrying the right equipment can significantly improve your trekking experience. Choose lightweight clothing that can be layered according to changing weather conditions. Invest in a good pair of waterproof trekking shoes with excellent grip, as the trail includes forest paths, rocky sections, and snow-covered terrain depending on the season.

Stay Hydrated and Acclimatize

High-altitude trekking requires proper hydration and gradual acclimatization. Drink plenty of water throughout the trek, eat nutritious meals, and avoid rushing while ascending. Listening to your trek leader's instructions and allowing your body time to adapt to the altitude are key to minimizing the chances of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

The Roopkund Trek is classified as a moderate to difficult Himalayan trek. While beginners with excellent physical fitness can complete it successfully, proper preparation is essential due to the high altitude, steep ascents, and long trekking days.

Trekkers should be comfortable walking for 6–9 hours daily while carrying a light backpack. The summit day is particularly demanding, involving a steep climb over rocky and occasionally snow-covered terrain.

To prepare effectively, begin training at least 6–8 weeks before your trek. Focus on building cardiovascular endurance through running, brisk walking, cycling, or stair climbing. Strength-training exercises such as squats, lunges, step-ups, and core workouts help improve stability and reduce fatigue during long trekking days.

Aim to comfortably run 5 km in 30–35 minutes or walk continuously for 10–12 km without excessive exhaustion. Regular stretching and flexibility exercises will also improve balance and help prevent injuries on uneven mountain trails.

Proper hydration, gradual acclimatization, adequate nutrition, and following your trek leader’s instructions are equally important for minimizing the risk of altitude sickness.

With careful preparation and expert guidance from The Mountain Hike, the Roopkund Trek becomes a safe, enjoyable, and deeply rewarding Himalayan adventure for both first-time high-altitude trekkers and experienced mountaineers.

Choosing the right season plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and enjoyable trekking experience. The Roopkund Trek is generally best undertaken during late spring, early summer, and autumn, when weather conditions are relatively stable and mountain views are at their finest.

Autumn is another highly recommended season. After the monsoon, the skies become exceptionally clear, offering spectacular panoramic views of Himalayan peaks. The weather remains cool and comfortable, while the trails are generally dry and ideal for trekking.

Monsoon (July to August)

Monsoon

Heavy rainfall during the monsoon makes the trails slippery and increases the risk of landslides. Dense fog often limits mountain visibility, making this season unsuitable for trekking.

Winter (November to April)

Winter

Heavy snowfall covers much of the trail, making Roopkund inaccessible for regular trekking. Extreme weather conditions and deep snow require specialized mountaineering equipment and expertise.
