Located in the Garhwal Himalayas, this trek takes you to the twin meadows of Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, often regarded as two of the most beautiful high-altitude meadows in India. Surrounded by snow-clad peaks like Mt. Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, and Neelkanth, the trek is a paradise for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure enthusiasts.

Starting from the peaceful village of Wan, the trail gradually ascends through dense oak and rhododendron forests before opening into endless green meadows stretching as far as the eye can see. Along the way, trekkers pass the sacred Latu Devta Temple, cross the pristine Neel Ganga River, and camp beneath star-filled Himalayan skies. The trail perfectly balances moderate adventure with breathtaking scenery, making it suitable for beginners as well as experienced trekkers.

Whether you're planning your first Himalayan adventure or searching for a peaceful escape into nature, the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek offers an experience unlike any other. With The Mountain Hike, every aspect of your journey is carefully organized—from experienced trek leaders and comfortable campsites to nutritious meals and complete safety support—ensuring you can focus entirely on enjoying the magnificent Himalayas.

Why Trek with The Mountain Hike?

The Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is much more than just a mountain walk—it is an opportunity to experience the untouched beauty of Uttarakhand's Himalayan landscapes. Every section of the trail offers something unique, from peaceful forests filled with birdsong to expansive alpine meadows that seem endless under the open sky. Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal are among the most spectacular high-altitude meadows in Uttarakhand, offering vast rolling grasslands and beautiful seasonal landscapes. During spring and summer, the meadows come alive with vibrant wildflowers, while autumn brings clear skies, golden landscapes, and exceptional mountain views.

Throughout the trek, you'll witness spectacular views of majestic Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and, depending on weather and visibility, other surrounding Himalayan summits. The journey also takes you through dense oak and rhododendron forests, creating a peaceful and immersive mountain atmosphere. During spring, blooming rhododendrons add brilliant shades of red and pink to the trail, while the changing landscapes, open meadows, and panoramic viewpoints make this trek particularly rewarding for nature lovers and photographers.

The trek also offers a rich local and spiritual experience. Beginning from Wan, a traditional Himalayan village, the journey provides an opportunity to experience local mountain life, traditional surroundings, and the warm hospitality of the region. One of the major highlights is Bedni Kund, a small alpine lake located near Bedni Bugyal that holds religious significance and is associated with the Nanda Devi tradition and pilgrimage route. Surrounded by peaceful meadows and dramatic Himalayan scenery, Bedni Kund adds an important cultural and spiritual dimension to the trek.

Ali Bedni Bugyal is also considered an easy-to-moderate trek, making it suitable for beginners with reasonable fitness, although some sections involve steep ascents and require proper preparation. The combination of gentle meadow walks, forest trails, mountain views, and high-altitude landscapes makes it an excellent introduction to Himalayan trekking. From sunrise over the peaks and golden meadows to forest trails and peaceful, star-filled campsites, every day offers excellent photography opportunities. With The Mountain Hike, trekkers can enjoy experienced guides, comfortable camping arrangements, nutritious meals, first-aid support, and professional trek leaders, with a focus on safety and a well-organized trekking experience. The Mountain Hike itself also publicly describes its Ali Bedni Bugyal expeditions as being supported by experienced guides, comfortable camping arrangements, and a strong focus on safety.

The approximately 286-kilometre journey is long but rewarding, taking you through winding mountain roads, deep river valleys, charming villages, terraced fields, and forested hills. As you leave Rishikesh behind, the landscape gradually changes from the lower Himalayan region to the higher Garhwal mountains.

The journey through the Alaknanda and Pindar river valleys offers a beautiful introduction to the landscapes you will experience during the trek.

From Lohajung, the road continues towards Wan Village, where the Himalayan surroundings become quieter and more remote. Upon arrival, check into your guesthouse or campsite and take some time to rest after the long drive.

In the evening, you can relax with your fellow trekkers, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, and attend a trek briefing with your experienced trek leader. The briefing will cover the route, safety guidelines, weather conditions, and preparations for the trekking days ahead.

An overnight stay in Wan Village gives you an opportunity to rest and prepare for the beginning of your Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek the following morning with The Mountain Hike.

Day 2 – Wan to Gairoli Patal (10,560 ft)

4–5 km 4–5 hrs. Gairoli Patal

After an early breakfast, your trekking adventure officially begins from Wan Village. The trail first leads to the sacred Latu Devta Temple, where locals and trekkers traditionally seek blessings before venturing into the high Himalayas. Surrounded by ancient deodar and oak trees, the temple holds deep cultural and spiritual significance in the region.

From here, the trail descends towards the crystal-clear Neel Ganga River. The sound of rushing water, cool mountain breeze, and peaceful surroundings make this an ideal place to pause, refill water bottles, and enjoy a short break before beginning the day's ascent.

Crossing the river, the path gradually climbs through dense forests filled with towering oak, maple, and rhododendron trees. During spring, these forests burst into vibrant shades of red and pink as rhododendron flowers bloom, creating one of the most beautiful sections of the trek. The forest is also home to numerous Himalayan bird species, making it a delight for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Although today's climb is steady, the distance is manageable, making it suitable even for first-time trekkers. As you gain altitude, occasional clearings offer your first distant views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, building excitement for the days ahead.

By afternoon, you'll arrive at Gairoli Patal, a peaceful forest campsite situated at around 10,560 feet. Surrounded by tall oak trees and open grassy patches, this campsite provides a tranquil setting to unwind after your first day on the trail. Enjoy a warm dinner prepared by the support staff before spending the night in comfortable alpine tents beneath a sky filled with countless stars.

Day 3 – Gairoli Patal to Ali Bedni Bugyal (11,700 ft Approx.)

6 km around 5 hours 11,700 ft

Wake up to the refreshing mountain air and enjoy a hot breakfast before beginning one of the most rewarding days of the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek. Leaving behind the dense forests of Gairoli Patal, the trail gradually climbs higher, and with every step, the landscape begins to transform dramatically. The towering oak and rhododendron trees slowly give way to vast open grasslands, revealing the spectacular beauty of the Himalayan alpine meadows.

As you reach Ali Bugyal, you'll be greeted by rolling green meadows stretching endlessly across the mountainside. During the summer months, these meadows are covered with lush grass and colourful wildflowers, while in autumn they turn into golden fields under crystal-clear blue skies. The peaceful surroundings, fresh mountain breeze, and uninterrupted views create an unforgettable trekking experience.

One of the highlights of the day is the magnificent panorama of the Garhwal Himalayas. Towering peaks like Mt. Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, and Neelkanth dominate the horizon, offering incredible opportunities for photography. Every turn on the trail reveals another breathtaking perspective, making this section of the trek one of the most scenic in Uttarakhand.

Continuing further, you'll reach Bedni Bugyal, another spectacular alpine meadow known for its immense natural beauty and cultural significance. Here lies the sacred Bedni Kund, a small high-altitude lake revered by local communities. Surrounded by lush grasslands and towering peaks, the lake adds a spiritual charm to the trek and serves as a peaceful place to pause and admire the Himalayan landscape.

After approximately five hours of trekking, you'll arrive at your campsite in Ali Bedni Bugyal. Spend the evening exploring the meadows, watching the changing colours of the mountains during sunset, or simply relaxing amidst nature. As darkness falls, the sky transforms into a brilliant canvas filled with countless stars, creating one of the most magical camping experiences in the Himalayas.

Enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by the support team before retiring to your tents for an overnight stay in the heart of the alpine meadows.

Day 4 – Ali Bedni Bugyal to Wan Village

9.5 km around 5–6 hours Wan Village

Wake up early to witness a spectacular Himalayan sunrise over the snow-covered peaks. As the first rays of sunlight illuminate Mt. Trishul and Nanda Ghunti, the surrounding meadows glow with golden hues, creating one final unforgettable memory of Ali Bedni Bugyal.

After breakfast, begin your descent back towards Wan Village. The trail retraces your route through the expansive alpine meadows before gradually entering the dense oak and rhododendron forests once again. Walking downhill allows you to appreciate the diverse landscapes from a completely different perspective.

The descent is relatively comfortable but includes a few steep sections that require careful footing. Along the way, you'll pass through peaceful forest trails alive with birdsong, flowing mountain streams, and occasional glimpses of wildlife. The changing scenery—from wide-open grasslands to thick forests—beautifully showcases the ecological diversity of the Garhwal Himalayas.

Take short breaks to enjoy the cool mountain breeze and capture the final views of the surrounding peaks before leaving the alpine zone behind. If weather conditions are clear, this is another excellent opportunity for landscape photography.

By afternoon, you'll arrive back at Wan Village. After checking into your guesthouse or campsite, you can relax with a warm cup of tea, freshen up, and reflect on the incredible experiences of the past few days. The peaceful atmosphere of the village provides the perfect setting to unwind after the trek.

Enjoy your final dinner in the mountains with fellow trekkers while sharing stories and memories from the journey. Overnight stay at Wan.

Day 5 – Wan Village to Rishikesh

286 km around 9–10 hours Trip Ends

After breakfast, bid farewell to the beautiful Himalayan village of Wan and begin your return journey towards Rishikesh. Although the trekking adventure has come to an end, the scenic drive provides one final opportunity to enjoy the spectacular landscapes of Uttarakhand.

The journey takes you through Lohajung and Karnaprayag, following winding mountain roads through forested slopes, deep valleys, terraced fields, and traditional Himalayan villages. As you gradually descend towards the lower Himalayan region, the landscape changes from the quieter mountain environment around Wan to the greener foothills closer to Rishikesh.

Along the way, the route passes through the river valleys associated with the Alaknanda and Pindar rivers, adding to the scenic beauty of the journey. Depending on the schedule and road conditions, you may take short breaks along the way for refreshments and rest.

  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
  • Maximum Altitude: Approximately 11,700 ft
  • Duration: 5 Days
  • Daily Trekking: 4–7 hours
  • Trail Type: Forest trails, alpine meadows, gradual ascents, and descents

  • Experienced trekkers looking for a relaxed Himalayan adventure

Children above 10 years and healthy senior citizens with prior trekking experience can also enjoy this trek after consulting their physician.

Recommended Fitness Level

To fully enjoy the trek without excessive fatigue, it's advisable to begin preparing at least 4–6 weeks before your departure.

A good fitness routine should include:

  • Jogging or running for 30–45 minutes
  • Stair climbing
  • Cycling
  • Squats and lunges for leg strength
  • Core strengthening exercises

The Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is one of the few Himalayan treks that offers breathtaking scenery across multiple seasons. From lush green meadows in summer to golden grasslands in autumn, every season brings a unique charm to the trail. Choosing the right time depends on the kind of experience you're looking for.

Spring (April to June)

The Most Popular Season

Spring and early summer are considered the best months for the trek. As the snow melts, the meadows come alive with vibrant greenery and colorful wildflowers. Rhododendron forests bloom in shades of red and pink, making the trail exceptionally beautiful.

The weather remains pleasant during the day, with temperatures ranging between 10°C and 18°C, while nights are cool, dropping to around 2°C to 8°C. The clear skies provide excellent visibility of Himalayan peaks like Mt. Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, and Neelkanth.

Highlights

  • Blooming rhododendron forests
  • Lush green alpine meadows
  • Comfortable trekking weather
  • Crystal-clear mountain views
  • Ideal for beginners and photographers
Monsoon (July to August)

Not Recommended

Heavy rainfall makes the trail slippery and increases the chances of landslides along the road to Wan. Dense fog often reduces mountain visibility, and continuous rain can make trekking uncomfortable.

Although the meadows become incredibly green during this period, the risks associated with monsoon trekking generally outweigh the rewards.

Highlights

  • Extremely lush landscapes
  • Frequent rainfall
  • Slippery trails
  • Poor mountain visibility
  • Not suitable for most trekkers
Autumn (September to November)

Best for Mountain Views

Autumn is another fantastic season for the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek. The monsoon clears away dust from the atmosphere, resulting in crystal-clear skies and spectacular views of the Himalayan ranges. The meadows gradually change from vibrant green to golden brown, creating stunning landscapes that photographers absolutely love.

Day temperatures remain pleasant between 8°C and 15°C, while nights become colder, often reaching 0°C to 5°C.

Highlights

  • Sharp Himalayan panoramas
  • Golden alpine meadows
  • Stable weather conditions
  • Beautiful sunrise and sunset views
  • Excellent photography opportunities
Winter (December to March)

During winter, heavy snowfall covers Ali and Bedni Bugyal, transforming the landscape into a white wonderland. However, deep snow often makes the regular trekking route inaccessible without specialized equipment and experienced guides.

Winter trekking is suitable only for experienced trekkers comfortable with snow conditions.

Best Season Recommended by The Mountain Hike

For the most enjoyable experience, The Mountain Hike recommends planning the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek during April to June or September to November, when the weather is pleasant, the trails are safe, and the Himalayan views are at their absolute best.

I went on the Roopkund Trek with The Mountain Hike. It was an amazing experience from start to end. It was a small group of 3 people and 2 guides - Lakshman bhai and Vicky bhai. Both were so sweet and very hospitable. They made every possible effort to make the trekking experience very good. The pros are: 1. Well informed and experienced guides. Apart from just guiding the route they were giving so many insights about the trail, about the landscape, different mountain peaks and were also telling stories/legends related to the villages passing by. Especially Vicky bhai was so insightful and had very good knowledge about the things I mentioned above. 2. Comfortable stay at Wan village, very spacious and sturdy tents while on trek and clean & comfortable sleeping bags. 3. Food was amazing. Lakshman bhai made sure we also have some dessert everyday after dinner. I'm also uploading some pictures and videos from the trek. Overall I had an amazing time and would definitely recommend it everyone.
