The route follows the Alaknanda River valley for much of the journey and passes through several important Prayags, where Himalayan rivers meet. At Devprayag, you can witness the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda Rivers, which forms the Ganga. Continuing towards the mountains, the route passes through Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Nandprayag, each surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
As the road climbs higher, the scenery gradually changes, with deeper valleys, forested mountains, terraced settlements, and, depending on weather conditions, distant views of snow-covered Himalayan peaks. The journey itself offers a beautiful introduction to the landscapes you will explore during the Pangarchulla trek.
After approximately eight to nine hours of driving, you reach Joshimath, an important Himalayan town and a major gateway to several trekking and pilgrimage routes in Uttarakhand. Upon arrival, check into your guesthouse and take some time to rest after the long drive.

Beautiful forest trails with views of Dronagiri Peak
Camping at Gulling Top
Wake up to the fresh mountain air in Joshimath and enjoy a hearty breakfast before beginning the trekking section of your Pangarchulla adventure. From Joshimath, you proceed towards the trailhead near Tugasi Village, depending on the route and trek logistics. From the starting point, the trail gradually ascends through peaceful Himalayan surroundings, with traditional Garhwali homes and terraced fields adding a glimpse into the local mountain landscape.
The trail soon enters dense Himalayan forests dominated by oak, rhododendron, and other mountain trees. During spring, blooming rhododendrons can bring vibrant colours to the forest, while winter may cover sections of the trail with snow, depending on weather conditions.
The quiet forest environment is accompanied by the calls of Himalayan birds, making the trail particularly enjoyable for nature lovers. Wildlife such as the Himalayan Monal or musk deer may inhabit the surrounding forests, although sightings are not guaranteed.
As you continue along the ascending trail, occasional openings in the forest provide opportunities to admire the surrounding mountains. On clear days, you may get beautiful views towards Dronagiri Peak, adding to the excitement of the journey.
After approximately four to five hours of trekking, you reach Gulling Top, where your campsite is set amid the peaceful Himalayan surroundings. Take some time to relax, enjoy refreshments, and appreciate the mountain scenery after the day's trek.
As evening approaches, the changing light over the surrounding mountains creates a beautiful atmosphere at the campsite. After a warm dinner, settle into your tent and enjoy the quiet Himalayan night. The overnight stay at Gulling Top prepares you for the more demanding sections of the Pangarchulla Peak Trek ahead with The Mountain Hike.
Day 3: Gulling Top to Khullara
5.5 km (approx. 4–5 hrs)
Expansive meadows and snow-covered trails
Camping at Khullara
After breakfast, begin today's trek towards Khullara, one of the most scenic campsites along the Pangarchulla route. The trail gradually gains altitude while the surrounding landscape begins to change dramatically.
Leaving the dense forests behind, the route opens into vast alpine meadows that provide uninterrupted views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. Depending on the season, these meadows are either covered with vibrant green grass and wildflowers or transformed into pristine white snowfields.
As you continue climbing, the towering peaks of Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, and neighboring Himalayan giants become increasingly prominent. The fresh mountain breeze, peaceful surroundings, and constantly changing scenery make today's trek one of the most enjoyable sections of the entire expedition.
During winter and early spring, sections of the trail remain covered with snow, giving trekkers their first real taste of snow trekking before the summit day. The gentle snow slopes also offer an excellent opportunity to become comfortable walking with trekking poles and crampons if required.
By afternoon, arrive at Khullara, an expansive high-altitude campsite surrounded by magnificent Himalayan peaks. This campsite serves as the base for tomorrow's summit attempt and offers spectacular sunset and sunrise views.
After lunch, spend the evening relaxing, hydrating well, and preparing your equipment for the challenging summit climb. Your trek leader will conduct a detailed briefing covering the next day's route, weather conditions, safety measures, and summit strategy.
As darkness falls, the snow-covered mountains glow under the moonlight, creating an unforgettable alpine atmosphere. Enjoy a nutritious dinner before retiring early, ensuring you're well-rested for the most exciting day of the Pangarchulla Peak Trek.
Day 4: Khullara to Pangarchulla Peak Summit and Back to Khullara
12 km (approx. 10–12 hrs)
Panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Hathi Parvat & Ghori Parvat
Camping at Khullara
Summit day is undoubtedly the most thrilling and rewarding part of the Pangarchulla Peak Trek. The day begins well before sunrise, allowing trekkers to make the most of stable morning weather and firm snow conditions. After an early breakfast, gear up with your backpack, trekking poles, crampons (during snow conditions), and other essential equipment before beginning the ascent.
Initially, the trail climbs gradually through alpine meadows and snow-covered slopes. As daylight spreads across the Garhwal Himalayas, the surrounding peaks begin to glow in shades of orange and gold, creating one of the most breathtaking sunrise views you will ever witness. The crisp mountain air and peaceful silence make the early morning climb a memorable experience.
After crossing the meadows, the terrain gradually becomes steeper and more demanding. Snowfields, rocky sections, and narrow ridges require careful footing and steady determination. Your trek leader will guide the group through each section, ensuring everyone maintains a safe pace while enjoying the adventure. Depending on the season, crampons may be used to improve grip on icy patches.
The final stretch towards Pangarchulla Peak is the most challenging. Every step requires focus and endurance, but the reward at the summit makes every effort worthwhile. Standing at approximately 15,069 feet, you are greeted by an unforgettable 360-degree panorama of the Garhwal Himalayas.
From the summit, enjoy spectacular views of Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba Massif, Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, Ghori Parvat, Neelkanth, Kamet, Mana Peak, and the vast snowfields of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.
Take time to capture photographs, celebrate your achievement, and soak in the incredible Himalayan scenery before beginning the descent. The return journey follows the same route back to Khullara. Although descending is generally easier, careful footing remains important, especially on snow-covered sections. By afternoon, reach the campsite where hot refreshments and a well-deserved meal await.
Spend the evening sharing stories with fellow trekkers while watching the sun disappear behind the snow-covered peaks. After dinner, enjoy a peaceful night beneath a sky illuminated by countless stars.
