Day 1: Rishikesh to Joshimath
247 km approx. 8–9 hrs Guesthouse in Joshimath
Your Kuari Pass Trek begins early in the morning from Rishikesh as you embark on one of the most scenic road journeys in Uttarakhand. The route follows the majestic Alaknanda River, passing through winding mountain roads, charming hill towns, and breathtaking valleys that offer spectacular Himalayan landscapes throughout the drive.
One of the major highlights of the journey is passing through the famous river confluences of Devprayag and Karnaprayag. Devprayag marks the sacred meeting point of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers, where the holy Ganga officially begins. As the drive continues, every turn unveils panoramic mountain views, cascading waterfalls, dense forests, and picturesque villages perched along the hillsides.
After crossing these beautiful places, you'll finally reach the peaceful Joshimath by evening. After checking into your comfortable guesthouse, enjoy a warm dinner while soaking in the peaceful mountain atmosphere. The crisp Himalayan air and serene surroundings provide the perfect setting to relax before the trekking journey begins.
Take some time to interact with fellow trekkers, prepare your backpack, and admire the starlit sky before getting a good night's rest.
Day 2: Joshimath to Gulling Top
4.5 km approx. 4–5 hrs Camping at Gulling Top
Today marks the beginning of your trekking journey as you leave Joshimath and head towards the scenic campsite of Gulling Top. After breakfast, you begin walking along a gradually ascending trail surrounded by the peaceful landscapes of the Garhwal Himalayas.
As the trail gains elevation, the surroundings become greener and more serene. Sections of the route pass through Himalayan forests, where oak, rhododendron, and other mountain trees create a refreshing environment. The pleasant sound of birds and cool mountain air make the walk enjoyable and allow you to experience the natural beauty of Uttarakhand at a relaxed pace.
The trail involves a steady climb, so maintaining a comfortable pace is important. Along the way, trekkers can enjoy views of the surrounding valleys and mountains whenever the forest opens into clearer sections. During the flowering season, rhododendrons can add bright colours to the landscape, while changing foliage in autumn creates a beautiful setting for photography.
After approximately four to five hours of trekking, you reach Gulling Top, where your campsite is set amidst the tranquil Himalayan surroundings. The open landscape around the campsite provides a wonderful place to rest and enjoy the mountain atmosphere after the day's walk.
The evening can be spent relaxing at the campsite, enjoying a warm meal, and taking in the peaceful surroundings. If the weather remains clear, the changing colours of the mountains around sunset and the night sky can make the camping experience especially memorable.
With The Mountain Hike, the day is planned to give trekkers enough time to acclimatize, enjoy the trail, and prepare for the more challenging and scenic sections of the Kuari Pass Trek ahead.
Day 3: Gulling Top to Khulara
5.5 km approx. 4–5 hrs Camping at Khulara
Wake up to the refreshing mountain air and spectacular sunrise over the Garhwal Himalayas. After a wholesome breakfast at Gulling Top, begin today's trek towards Khulara, one of the most scenic campsites on the Kuari Pass Trek. Although the distance is similar to the previous day, today's trail offers a completely different landscape, gradually opening up to expansive alpine meadows and uninterrupted mountain vistas.
The route passes through beautiful forests of oak and rhododendron before emerging into wide grasslands where trekkers can truly appreciate the vastness of the Himalayas. As the tree line begins to thin, magnificent peaks such as Dronagiri, Hathi-Ghoda, and Neelkanth start appearing more prominently. Every step brings a fresh perspective, making this section of the trek especially rewarding for photographers and nature lovers.
The peaceful surroundings, crisp mountain breeze, and rhythmic sound of your footsteps create a meditative trekking experience. During spring and summer, colorful wildflowers bloom across the meadows, while autumn paints the landscape in warm golden hues. In winter, these same trails transform into a snow-covered paradise, adding a magical charm to the journey.
Along the way, your trek leader from The Mountain Hike will share fascinating insights about the local flora, Himalayan wildlife, and the cultural significance of the surrounding region. Keep an eye out for Himalayan monals, mountain eagles, and other native birds that inhabit these forests.
By afternoon, you'll arrive at the picturesque Khulara campsite, nestled amidst open meadows with panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. This campsite is widely regarded as one of the highlights of the trek, offering breathtaking sunset views and a peaceful atmosphere far away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
As evening falls, gather around with fellow trekkers, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and admire the star-filled Himalayan sky before resting for the most exciting day of the expedition.
Day 4: Khulara to Kuari Pass Summit and Back to Joshimath
12 km approx. 6–7 hrs Joshimath
Today is one of the most exciting and rewarding days of the Kuari Pass Trek as you make your way from Khulara to Kuari Pass before descending towards Joshimath. An early morning start is recommended so you can complete the summit section comfortably and enjoy the best possible mountain views.
After breakfast, begin the ascent from Khulara through alpine meadows and gradually steeper mountain terrain. The trail becomes more open as you gain elevation, offering expansive views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. Snow conditions may vary depending on the season, and some sections can become more challenging during winter.
After a steady climb, you reach Kuari Pass, one of the most scenic high-altitude passes in the Garhwal Himalayas. From the pass, trekkers can enjoy spectacular views of prominent Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Kamet, Chaukhamba, Trishul, and Hathi-Ghoda. Clear weather provides an impressive panoramic mountain vista, making this a perfect place to stop, take photographs, and appreciate the achievement.
After spending some time at Kuari Pass, begin the long descent towards Joshimath. The return journey takes you through changing Himalayan landscapes, including open meadows and forested sections. Although the descent is generally easier than the climb, the overall distance makes this a demanding day, so maintaining a steady pace and staying hydrated is important.
As you continue downhill, the landscape gradually changes as you lose altitude. After completing the trek, you reach the roadhead and continue your journey towards Joshimath. Depending on the exact route and logistics, the final approach to Joshimath may include a short drive.
Arriving in Joshimath marks the completion of an unforgettable summit day. After the challenging trek, you can rest, enjoy a warm meal, and reflect on the incredible Himalayan experience. With the support of the experienced team at The Mountain Hike, the journey to Kuari Pass becomes a memorable combination of adventure, mountain scenery, and achievement.
Day 5: Joshimath to Rishikesh
247 km approx. 8–9 hrs Trip ends on arrival in Rishikesh
The final day of your Kuari Pass Trek begins with a peaceful morning in Joshimath. After breakfast, get ready for the scenic drive back to Rishikesh, marking the final journey of your Himalayan adventure.
Leaving Joshimath behind, the road winds through the beautiful mountain landscapes of Uttarakhand. The drive follows the Alaknanda River valley, offering views of forested slopes, deep valleys, mountain villages, and winding Himalayan roads along the way. The changing scenery provides a relaxing contrast to the days spent trekking through alpine meadows and high-altitude trails.
As the journey continues, you pass through important towns and settlements along the route, including Karnaprayag and Devprayag. At Devprayag, the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet to form the Ganga, making it one of the significant geographical and cultural landmarks along the journey.
After several hours on the mountain roads, you continue towards the lower Himalayan region and eventually reach Rishikesh. The journey marks the end of your Kuari Pass adventure.
On arrival in Rishikesh, the trek officially concludes. It is time to say goodbye to your trekking team and fellow trekkers while carrying home memories of Himalayan peaks, forests, meadows, mountain trails, and the experiences shared along the way.
With The Mountain Hike, your Kuari Pass Trek comes to a memorable conclusion, leaving you with the satisfaction of completing a rewarding Himalayan adventure.
